Bypass Brings Big Innovation to Big Tex at Fair Park

Austin, TX – As the saying goes, “everything’s bigger in Texas!” Towering at almost 60 feet above Fair Park, Big Tex will see over 2 million people pass by him hoping to taste the latest creative fried-food experiment offered by vendors. It’s all part of the sights, sounds and smells that the State Fair of Texas has to offer.

Also at Fair Park sits the iconic Cotton Bowl® Stadium. Cotton Bowl® Stadium hosts many events including the annual Red River Showdown game between the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners. Cotton Bowl® Stadium is nearing 90 years of operation and with it comes specific requirements to be able to provide for a great fan experience. In addition to upgrades throughout the venue, one of the other changes will be that fans will be able to purchase beer for the 1st time. As such, it became clear that the venue needed to upgrade its point-of-sale system to meet all compliance standards.

A graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, Nils Marchand, Senior Vice-President of Revenue noted, “having been to many games at the Cotton Bowl, I look forward to seeing Bypass become a small part of such a memorable tradition! We’re excited for our team to work closely with our great partners at Spectra in making that game and all the other events go off without a hitch.”

To keep the lines of fans who don’t want to miss a minute of the action moving, fans will be able to pay via the fastest and most secure credit card transactions in the industry as well as using their Apple and Google phones to complete their purchases.

“Every year I’ve been to the Texas-OU game, I’ve had to miss entire drives because I was waiting in line to buy a bottle of water and needing to use those tickets we had to buy in another location. I’m excited to pay with my credit card or even my iWatch so I can get my concessions quick enough to get me back in my seat before play begins,” says Sarah Stamets, a Junior Communications Major at The University of Texas at Austin.

Fair Park, home to the State Fair of Texas and Cotton Bowl® Stadium, sits on a sprawling 277-acre campus only minutes from downtown Dallas. A key criterion for Fair Park First, Spectra and the State Fair of Texas deciding on the right technology solution for them was specific to the portability and durability of the hardware being used. Leveraging the Clover hardware stack, the Bypass solution provides for incredible portability, integrated battery, lasting durability and the ability to manage transactions in non-connected environments.

“This is the first time in the 89-year history of the Cotton Bowl that fans will have the ability to pay with their credit cards or their phone,” said Spectra’s Peter Sullivan, General Manager for Fair Park. “This will create a seamless transaction process for patrons and provide an upgrade to the level of service.”

Bypass is proud to have partnered with 5 Wards Group to facilitate the installation and operational execution for this project. 5 Wards Group is a nationally-certified Minority and Women Business Enterprise with decades of experience that was able to exceed all expectations.

Lastly, Spectra Food Services needed to ensure that the system they selected was very intuitive for temporary staff and volunteer groups to use in order to minimize downtime and manage labor costs effectively. After a thorough review, it was clear that the Bypass user interface was designed with that efficiency in mind.

You’ll be able to experience the Bypass solution at Cotton Bowl Stadium in the fall. If time permits, you may want to try your share of deep-fried chicken cordon bleu stuffed waffles, deep-fried Nutella custard stuffed french toast or maybe even a deep-fried energy bite if you’re there during the State Fair of Texas!
